In a social landscape dominated by one or more religions and their interreligious conversations, or better: debate, it is refreshing to meet those that are not limited by dogmas rooted in antiquity, myth and delusion. Richard Dawkins is such a person, and then some. Dawkins thinks religion, and religious thought, is downright dangerous.
Rarely I meet someone who's dislike of the whole concept of organized religion borders mine. And I mean dislike of a non-incapacitating type; it doesn't stop me from being interested and intrigued, it doesn't stop me separating concept from practice, dogma and original thought.
Richard Dawkins, in his 2 part Channel4 documentary "Root of All Evil?", takes this one step further.
the threat against evolution.
Where I would have argued religious thought is hindering a person's social and mental evolution, Dawkins is convinced it's a threat against all of humanities evolution. And he makes a convincing case.

against religion: it teaches to be satisfied with not understanding
Dawkins, a British ethologist and evolutionary biologist, begins the two part series with showing us how faith cannot be anything other than a delusion, a fixed false belief. He does this by examining some of the peculiarities of the 3G of religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) and pitting them against some of man's rudimentary software (pattern recognition, face-recognition, social group thinking).

After seeing this I found it even harder to understand that religion is actually on the rise, considering all we know about human behavior and the obvious fallacies rampant in the communal dogmas of the 3G.
mental virus
In part two Dawkins goes deeper into what memes and group think can do to ordinary, intelligent humans. He then goes on to compare the memes rooted in religion with viruses.
The scary part of this is how these two, thought/memes as a virtual construct and viruses as living organisms, indeed show similar, if not like, behavior. And often with similar, devastating effect. I can now see where he regards it as dangerous and divisive. Because it is.

Most people who know me know I regard religion, specifically the organized variant, as a peculiar and somewhat hindering human trait. My emotion normally ranging from dislike to moderate annoyance.
After seeing Dawkins make his case I have to admit this is somewhat changing, and not for the best. I now hope Man will survive religion long enough to be able to prohibit it at a certain point. Really.
