On account of there being this ice hockey player, apparently of some stature, who goes by the name of Patrick Kane, Google regards searches for my name, Patrick Kanne, as a possible typo.
Yes. Blatant Narcissism compels you for years at end to plaster your name all over the web. With just the humble expectation to have the first page of ALL possible search engines all to yourself. Really. Is that too much to ask? To expect from the medium you would marry if it would only be allowed to? Apparently it is.
Is Google insulting my public?
Due to this one person, this Patrick Kane, apparently is the right wing of the Chicago Blackhawks, Google, the leading search engine on the web, dares to imply people would make a typing error when they are looking for me.
This must be the most gruesome thing to have happen to a person or brand. This one line on the top of your coveted first page, with these three earth shattering words..
Did You Mean...
The day I saw them first they burned into me as if it were "Thou Shalt Not".
After being sick for at least a week, which included a lot of moaning and breaking of mirrors and taking it out on innocent livestock, and a solid two months of sulking I came to the idea to duke it out using Google itself. And there is only one place to do such a thing and this is on Googlefight.
Needless to say this ended in even more tears and screaming and taking it out on innocent livestock.
There is probably some lesson to be learned from this. Something about one effort being relative to another effort. For now I choose to disregard all that and indulge in a healthy dose of paralyzing self pity. Which is of course the sane thing to do.
Meanwhile, back in reality
Semi-Seriously though, how would you come back from this? Save from doing something ludicrous and have your name elevated into the mainstream conversation (and have people flock to Wikipedia to scandalize and/or embrace you for your act).
And I'm not talking about this instance, because it fairly obvious why Mr. Kane gets the preferred treatment. Besides, being that the linkage on the first three-plus pages returned from the 'Patrick Kanne' search are related to me, I'm thinking my misguided ego is well served ;).
No, I'm curious as to whether or this has happened to an actual brand. And what would the consequences of this be? Both from a marketing-analytics point of view as from a user experience point of view.
Merits further research I'm thinking.. Expect me to get back on this.
